A cat that is destroying the sofa is not being difficult. It is choosing the best available scratching surface in the house, and in most houses the sofa genuinely is the best available scratching surface: tall enough for a full stretch, rigid enough to pull against, and in the room the household spends time in.

That reframes the purchase. You are not buying a deterrent. You are buying something that beats the sofa on the three specs the cat is judging — height, rigidity, and location — and then putting it where the sofa is. Most posts on the market lose on the first spec before they leave the box.

The height problem, in numbers

A large domestic cat stretched from front claws to hind feet covers roughly 30 inches. A typical retail scratching post is 20 inches tall. The cat cannot complete the stretch on it, so it completes the stretch on the arm of the sofa, which is about 26 inches off the floor and does not wobble.

If the listing does not publish a height, do not buy it.

Vertical and horizontal are different problems

A cat destroying the carpet and a cat destroying the sofa arm are doing two different things, and a vertical post does nothing for the first. If the damage is on the floor, you want a horizontal corrugate scratcher; if it is on furniture, you want height. Buying the wrong orientation is the second most common reason a post gets ignored, after height.
