Orientation is a preference, not a phase
Our why cats scratch page explains the three jobs scratching does. Which direction a cat does them in is individual and, in our experience of readers’ questions, remarkably stable. A cat that scratches carpet at two years old is still scratching carpet at ten.
So the fix for a carpet scratcher is a horizontal surface, placed where the carpet damage is. Not a taller post, not a better post — a flat one.
How much surface you actually get

The picks
The Graciadeco mats win because they match the problem. A cat scratching a rug is scratching a woven fiber surface, and sisal fabric is the nearest approved equivalent. Scratching sheds the worn outer sheath and an abrasive surface takes a little off the point. Neither shortens the claw the way a clipper does.
