How to Stop a Cat Scratching the Carpet
A cat working the rug at the bedroom door is not being destructive. It is a horizontal scratcher marking a threshold, and both halves of that matter.

Carpet scratching gets treated as a discipline problem. It is a shape problem: the cat is telling you which way it likes to scratch, and it is not the way your post points.
Why that patch
Two things decide where a cat scratches carpet, and neither is random. The first is orientation: some cats stretch up, some stretch out, and the second group will walk past any post to work a rug.

The three-part fix
Cover the spot. A horizontal sisal mat on the exact patch. Not nearby -- on it. The cat has already told you the location is right.
Deter the carpet around it. Double-sided tape makes the old surface unpleasant for a few weeks. It is a bridge, not a solution.
Keep the claws short. Trimming does not change the behavior, but it halves what a session does to the pile while the redirection takes hold.
What to put down

What not to do
- Do not punish it. A cat shouted at for scratching learns to scratch when you are out, which is the same damage with less information for you.
- Do not move the post and hope. If the cat is horizontal, a post in a new corner changes nothing.
- Do not rely on spray repellents alone. They wear off, and they do not give the cat anywhere to go.
- Do not remove the mat once it works. A worn sisal mat is a mat doing its job -- replace it rather than withdrawing it.

Scratching sheds the worn outer sheath and an abrasive surface takes a little off the point. Neither shortens the claw the way a clipper does. So a filing board reduces how sharp a claw is without changing how long it is, and the marketing phrase 'no need to cut nails manually' overstates what the geometry can do.
