Best Indoor Cat Playpens and Cages (2026)
A pen has one job: hold one cat, humanely, for a few days. The specification that decides whether it can is the floor left over once a litter box is inside it.
Affiliate disclosure: we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we rank first — here is how we're funded.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty litter boxes. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specs, read the manuals, and do the arithmetic on what this gear costs to run and how it behaves once there is more than one cat using it. Every spec is linked to the document it came from. Prices are checked daily — last verified October 22, 2026. Here is exactly how we pick.

| # | Product | Best for | Score | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ![]() PawGiant 6-Tier Cat Cage, 36 x 22 x 72 in The only pen here that publishes its bar gap, and the tallest by a wide margin -- 72 inches of wire with three doors, so a cat can be contained without being cornered. | Separation that actually holds a determined cat | 8.2 | |
| 2 | ![]() Oneluck 3-Tier Cat Cage, 28.6 x 17.8 x 55.1 in A 17.8 inch footprint buys you a pen that fits beside a bed instead of dominating the room -- and costs you the ability to put a full-size litter box in it, which the listing does not mention. | A pen that fits where the tall one will not | 7.0 | |
| 3 | ![]() FurHaven Soft-Sided Pet Playpen, Extra Large The biggest floor here for the least money, and the one that will not hold an adult cat: 29.5 inches tall with a removable top is a boundary, not a barrier. | Supervised play, travel and kittens -- not containment | 7.1 |
#ad Buy links are affiliate links. Prices come from a live daily check; where we have no verified price we say "check price" rather than print a stale one.
Buy the PawGiant 6-tier (36 x 22 x 72 in) if the cat genuinely has to stay put: three doors, a published 1.6 inch bar gap, and enough floor that a real litter box still leaves room to stand. Buy the Oneluck 3-tier if 36 inches of floor will not fit, and know in advance which boxes fit its 17.8 inch width. Buy the FurHaven soft pen only as a boundary for a kitten or supervised play — at 29.5 inches with a removable top it holds no adult cat. And if you have a spare room with a door, use the room.
The job a pen is actually for
This site does not usually recommend confining a cat, and this page is not a change of position. There are four situations where a pen is the right answer, and they are all temporary:
- The see-but-not-touch stage of an introduction. Our cat gates page is blunt about why a gate fails here: cats jump it. The stage needs a barrier neither cat can cross, and our introduction guide runs the stages it belongs to.
- A foster or a litter of kittens who need containment while the household carries on around them.
- Supervised recovery, where the duration is set by the vet who did the procedure and not by a buying guide. The Cornell Feline Health Center is the place to read about the medical side.
- A hotel room or a stay somewhere else, where the alternative is leaving the cat in a carrier.
In all four, the pen is holding one cat plus that cat’s resources for a few days. That is the brief this page measures against — not tier count, which is what the listings advertise.
What a pen had to publish to be here
- Floor dimensions, in inches. Not a tier count and not a capacity claim. The floor is what the cat and the litter box have to share.
- Height. The number that decides whether the pen contains a cat at all.
- Door count. One door is a corner a cat can be trapped in. The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative treats a cat’s ability to retreat as a basic need, and that does not stop applying because the cat is penned.
- A cleaning path. A slide-out tray, a removable chassis or a washable floor panel. A pen a cat lives in for a week gets dirty.
- Currently purchasable. Every pick was resolved and checked as in stock. Two obvious candidates were dropped for stock alone: the MidWest folding cat playpen (one left) and the Amazon Basics 3-tier (temporarily out of stock).
We have not assembled any of these. What we can do is take the floor each maker publishes, measure it against the litter boxes this site already ranks, and report what is left.
What the three publish

Makers' published figures from the listings named in our sources, read on 2026-10-22. The oval floor figure is ours, computed below. Every 'not published' is a finding rather than a research gap.
The figure nobody publishes: does the box fit?
Every pen listing advertises tiers. None of them tells you the thing you need to know, which is whether the litter box you own will go inside and what is left afterwards. The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative guidance is that a box should be large enough for the cat to stand in and turn around; a pen that only takes a small box is a pen that only works for a short stay.
So we took the external dimensions these pens publish and the external dimensions of four boxes this site already ranks, and did the arithmetic.
| Litter box (published external size) | PawGiant, 36 x 22 in | Oneluck, 28.6 x 17.8 in |
|---|---|---|
| IRIS XX-Large open top, 30.18" x 20.13" | Fits -- 185 sq in left (23%) | Does NOT fit -- 1.6 in too long |
| Frisco XL high-sided, 24" x 18" | Fits -- 360 sq in left (45%) | Does NOT fit -- 0.2 in too wide |
| So Phresh X-Large pan, 22.4" x 16.9" | Fits -- 413 sq in left (52%) | Fits -- 130 sq in left (26%) |
| Necoichi portable box, 15" x 11" | Fits -- 627 sq in left (79%) | Fits -- 344 sq in left (68%) |
Our arithmetic, from the pens' and boxes' own published external dimensions. Percentages are the share of the pen's floor still free with that box inside.
PawGiant: 36 x 22 = 792 sq in. The maker says it suits “3~5 cats”. Put the smallest sensible box in — a 15 x 11 in travel box — and 627 sq in remain. Divided by five cats that is 125 sq in each, about a sheet of letter paper. Divided by one cat it is a reasonable short-stay pen.
Oneluck: 28.6 x 17.8 = 509 sq in, and the width is the binding constraint. The Frisco XL high-sided box is 18 inches wide against a 17.8 inch floor: it misses by 0.2 inches, which is not a margin anybody checks before ordering. Its own “1-2 kitty” claim reads honestly as one cat and a small or travel box.
FurHaven: a 51 by 44 inch oval is pi x 25.5 x 22 = about 1,762 sq in — more than twice the PawGiant’s floor. It is also 29.5 inches tall with a lift-off top, so the floor is the only specification it wins on.
Height is the containment spec
Our cat gates page opens from a fact about cats rather than about gates: most healthy adult cats clear a 36 inch barrier without thinking about it. Apply that here and the category splits cleanly in two.
- 72 inches (PawGiant) and 55.1 inches (Oneluck) are enclosures. A latched door is the only way out.
- 29.5 inches (FurHaven) is a boundary. It works on a kitten, a cat that does not want to leave, or a cat you are watching — and nothing in the listing claims otherwise.
Which one, and who should skip it
The PawGiant 6-tier is the pick. It publishes the bar gap, it has three lockable doors so the cat is never cornered behind a single opening, it is 72 inches tall, and both a slide-out tray and a removable chassis mean it can be cleaned properly rather than wiped. It collapses flat, which matters for a thing you need for two weeks a year. Skip it if your room cannot give up 36 by 22 inches of floor, or if you were buying it on the strength of the “3~5 cats” claim — the arithmetic above does not support that claim.
The Oneluck 3-tier is the pick when the floor is the constraint: 28.6 by 17.8 inches fits beside a bed where the PawGiant does not, it still has three doors, and it is the cheapest wire pen here. Skip it if you want a full-size litter box inside — its floor takes a So Phresh X-Large pan and leaves a quarter of the room, and misses the Frisco XL by two tenths of an inch. Also note its listing promises a litter box in the title while the included-components field lists only a ramp, and disagrees with itself about how many levels it has.
The FurHaven soft pen is the pick for the job the wire pens are wrong for: a kitten pen in the middle of a room, a travel pen in a hotel, a supervised rest space with a washable floor. It has by far the most floor, folds into a bag, and costs a fraction of the others. Skip it if the cat has to stay in it unsupervised. It is 29.5 inches tall, the top lifts off, and fabric plus mesh against claws is a short-lived combination.
Setting a pen up so the cat tolerates it
- Box at one end, bed and food at the other. Cats do not eat or sleep next to their own waste, and in a 36 inch pen that separation is the whole layout decision. Our litter box placement page covers the principle at room scale.
- Give it cover. A pen is an exposed box. The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative treats hiding as a basic need, and a cardboard box or a covered bed inside the pen is the cheapest fix there is. Our cat caves page covers the bought versions.
- Use the height. Both wire pens publish platforms and ramps, and a cat that can get above floor level in a confined space is a calmer cat — the same logic as our vertical space plan.
- Put it where the household is, not in a spare room. The point of a pen over a closed door is that the cat stays part of the house. If the pen ends up in the garage, use a room instead.
- Open it on a schedule. Supervised time out of the pen every day, from day one. A pen is a stage in a plan, not the plan.
What a pen does not solve
- Tension between cats. Confinement moves the problem; resource counts fix it. Our resource competition guide and box count page are the free version of this purchase.
- A cat that needs more space than a cage. Long-term confinement is a welfare question, not a layout one. If the honest answer is weeks, the answer is a room.
- Outdoor access. That is a different product — see outdoor enclosures and catios, which are weatherproof and much larger.
- Keeping a dog away from the litter box. A gate with a cat door does that without confining anyone — cat gates covers it.
- Medical decisions. How long a cat rests after a procedure, and how strictly, is the vet’s call. The Cornell Feline Health Center is the place to start reading, and a buying guide is not.

PawGiant 6-Tier Cat Cage, 36 x 22 x 72 in
PawGiant · Indoor cat pen · Our score 8.2/10

#ad Price as of October 22, 2026. Prices move; we check daily. How we're funded.
The only pen here that publishes its bar gap, and the tallest by a wide margin -- 72 inches of wire with three doors, so a cat can be contained without being cornered.
Published specs
| Dimensions | 36" L x 22" W x 72" H |
|---|---|
| Floor footprint | 792 sq in (36 x 22) |
| Levels | 6, on detachable ramps |
| Doors | 3, with locks (maker states they resist a clever cat) |
| Bar gap | 1.6" (published -- almost nobody states this) |
| Weight | 52 lb assembled |
| Construction | Steel wire, anti-rust coating, polished edges |
| Cleaning | Slide-out bottom tray plus a removable chassis |
| Mobility | Four 360-degree swivel casters |
| Storage | Fully collapsible; 15-30 minute assembly (maker) |
| Maker's capacity claim | "3~5 cats simultaneously" -- see our arithmetic, which does not support it |
The floor is 36 x 22 = 792 sq in. A So Phresh X-Large open pan is 22.4 x 16.9 = 378.6 sq in, so it leaves 413 sq in -- 52 percent of the floor. An IRIS XX-Large open-top box is 30.18 x 20.13 = 607.5 sq in: it fits, barely, and leaves 185 sq in, which is 23 percent. That is the figure that kills the maker's own 3-to-5-cat claim: five cats sharing the leftover floor with the smallest sensible box have about 125 sq in each, roughly a sheet of letter paper. Read this as a ONE-cat pen with room for a real box, or two cats for a few supervised hours.
What the specs favor
- Publishes a 1.6 inch bar gap, the one safety figure this category almost never states
- 72 inches tall, so a cat cannot simply hop out
- Three doors, so the cat is never cornered behind a single opening
- Slide-out tray AND a removable chassis, which is two levels of cleanability
- Collapses flat, so it is not furniture for the eleven months it is not needed
What they don't
- The "3~5 cats" capacity claim is not supported by its own floor area once a litter box is inside
- 792 sq in of floor is a real footprint in a small room
- 52 lb assembled: the casters are doing necessary work, not adding convenience
- Six wire levels is a lot of bars for a cat that wants a solid surface to lie on
- Unbranded-tier maker with no published warranty term
You have a spare room with a door. A closed room beats every pen in this category for the same job, and costs nothing.

Oneluck 3-Tier Cat Cage, 28.6 x 17.8 x 55.1 in
Oneluck · Indoor cat pen · Our score 7.0/10

#ad Price as of October 22, 2026. Prices move; we check daily. How we're funded.
A 17.8 inch footprint buys you a pen that fits beside a bed instead of dominating the room -- and costs you the ability to put a full-size litter box in it, which the listing does not mention.
Published specs
| Dimensions | 28.6" L x 17.8" W x 55.1" H |
|---|---|
| Floor footprint | 509 sq in (28.6 x 17.8) |
| Doors | 3 |
| Levels | Listing contradicts itself: the spec field says 1, the bullets say "4-tier" with 3 platforms |
| Ramps | 2, connecting the platforms |
| Litter box | Title says "with Litter Box"; the bullets describe a litter box AREA and the included-components field lists only a ramp |
| Construction | Iron wire |
| Bar gap | Not published |
| Assembly | About 20 minutes, no tools (maker) |
| Maker's capacity claim | Ideal for 1-2 kittens |
The floor is 28.6 x 17.8 in. The IRIS XX-Large open-top box is 30.18 in long: it does not fit, by 1.6 inches. The Frisco XL high-sided box is 18 in wide: it misses by 0.2 inches, which is the kind of margin nobody checks before ordering. A So Phresh X-Large pan (22.4 x 16.9) fits and leaves 130 sq in of floor -- 26 percent. A Necoichi portable box (15 x 11) fits and leaves 344 sq in. So the honest reading of the maker's '1-2 kitty' claim is one cat and a small or travel box, which is exactly what a short separation needs and nothing more.
What the specs favor
- Three doors on a small pen, so access does not mean cornering the cat
- 509 sq in of floor fits in rooms the 36 inch pen cannot
- Two ramps and platforms give vertical space inside a narrow footprint
- Published 20-minute, no-tools assembly, and it disassembles for storage
- The cheapest wire pen here
What they don't
- The title promises a litter box the included-components list does not include
- Its own listing disagrees on how many levels it has
- No published bar gap, which is the figure that matters with a kitten
- At 55.1 inches it is tall enough to contain a cat, but the floor is too small for a full-size box plus a cat
- No published assembled weight, so how stable it is cannot be checked before it arrives
You need to confine a cat with a normal litter box for more than a day or two. The floor arithmetic above says a full-size box leaves a quarter of the floor, and that is not a week's accommodation.

FurHaven Soft-Sided Pet Playpen, Extra Large
FurHaven · Indoor cat pen · Our score 7.1/10

#ad Price as of October 22, 2026. Prices move; we check daily. How we're funded.
The biggest floor here for the least money, and the one that will not hold an adult cat: 29.5 inches tall with a removable top is a boundary, not a barrier.
Published specs
| Dimensions | 51" L x 44" W x 29.5" H |
|---|---|
| Shape | Round, pop-up |
| Height | 29.5" -- below the jump most healthy adult cats clear |
| Material | Polyester, easy-wipe |
| Door | Zippered |
| Top | Removable |
| Ventilation | 360-degree mesh windows |
| Floor | Fully removable, machine washable panel |
| Storage | Folds flat into an included carry bag; no tools |
| Warranty | 60-day worry-free (needs registration within 14 days) plus 90-day limited |
| Listing inconsistency | Title says "Dog & Cat"; the pet-type and target-species fields both say Dog |
Our cat gates page starts from a published fact about cats rather than about gates: most healthy adult cats clear a 36 inch barrier without thinking about it. This pen is 29.5 inches tall with a removable top, so it does not contain an adult cat that wants out -- and nothing in the listing claims it does. What it does do is mark a space: a kitten under about four months, a cat recovering under supervision, or a travel pen for a hotel room where the alternative is a carrier. Judge it as a boundary, not a cage.
What the specs favor
- By far the largest floor here, at a fraction of the price of the wire pens
- Folds flat into a carry bag, so it travels and stores in nothing
- Removable machine-washable floor panel, which no wire pen offers
- 360-degree mesh means a nervous cat can see out on every side
- Sets up in seconds with no tools
What they don't
- 29.5 inches does not contain an adult cat, and the top lifts off
- Fabric and mesh against claws is a short-lived combination
- Its own listing fields say the pet type is Dog while the title says Dog and Cat
- A 51 by 44 inch circle is a lot of floor to give up while it is up
- The 60-day warranty needs product registration within 14 days to apply
The job is separation during a cat introduction, post-operative rest, or anything where the cat must stay put. Buy a wire pen with a door latch, or use a room.
