Hiding is a need
The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative lists hiding places among the basic environmental needs of an indoor cat, alongside food, water, litter and somewhere to perch. A cat without one will make its own -- under a bed, behind a sofa, in the back of a wardrobe.
A cave bed makes that spot a piece of furniture you chose, in a room you want the cat to be in. That is the whole value proposition, and it is a strong one in a busy or multi-cat house.
The entrance decides it
MEOWFIA publishes the large cave at 19 inches wide, 12 high, with an 8 inch round entrance, for cats up to 20 lb.
Eight inches passes an average cat comfortably. For a large cat it is a closer fit, and a cat that has to squeeze in also has to squeeze out -- which is the opposite of what a nervous cat wants from a hiding place.
So size on the opening first and the weight guidance second. Weight tells you whether the structure copes; the entrance tells you whether the cat will use it.

The picks
The MEOWFIA felt cave is the pick, and the published entrance is why. It is the only cave in our data that tells you how big the hole is, which is the number that decides whether your cat uses it. Merino wool holds shape and warmth, and the cave can be reshaped as the cat prefers.
The K&H Mod Dream Pod is the roomier option at 22 inches square -- space to lie stretched rather than curled. Retailers cannot agree on its height, which is why it is second: measure it when it arrives, and check the roof clears a sitting cat’s ears.

- Spread them out, ideally on different levels of the room.
Keeping one usable

- Air it regularly. An enclosed bed gets warm and damp from a sleeping cat.
- Do not force a cat in. Put a treat inside and walk away.
- Move it if it is ignored for two weeks. Usually the location is wrong, not the bed.

A 22 inch square pod gives a cat room to lie stretched out; a 19 inch felt cave is a curl-up space. The inconsistent height listings are why we would measure it on arrival -- a hood that sits low on a large cat's ears is a hood it stops using.

No heater, no cord, no draw. Against the Thermo-Kitty Bed's ceiling of about $2.11 for a 24/7 winter, the saving is small -- which is the point. Choose the unpowered bed because you do not want a cord near a chewer, not because of the electricity bill.
