Travel litter boxes fail in one of two ways: they never get packed because they do not fold small enough, or they leak. Both are predictable from the specification.
The two specifications
Necoichi publishes 15 by 11 by 5.1 inches and states that the box folds flat and snaps closed.
The second, less obvious spec is the liner: seamless and waterproof. A travel box made from stitched panels leaks along the stitch line, because that is where the needle made holes. A seamless liner has no such line.
Between them those two figures predict almost everything about whether a travel box works: it gets packed because it folds, and it does not ruin a suitcase because the liner has no seam.
What 165 square inches means
15 by 11 inches is 165 square inches of floor. A Petmate jumbo pan is about 372. So a travel box is under half the floor of a home box — which is correct for a suitcase and wrong for a house.
The road-trip routine
- Offer the box at stops, not in motion. Doors closed, engine off, carrier open, box on the floor. Most cats will not use one in a moving car.
- Take familiar litter. Substrate preference is strong, and a strange box with strange litter is two changes at once. Our litter types page explains why cats hold those preferences for life.
- Bring liners and bags. A correctly sized liner turns a roadside change into lifting one bag.
- Never open a carrier outdoors. A frightened cat in an unfamiliar place runs, and the roadside is the worst place for it to happen.
- Set it up first at the destination, before letting the cat out of the carrier.
The carrier is the other half

A stroller is the other travel format worth knowing about, at a published 25 inches of interior length — more than any carrier we track, and enough for a cat to lie stretched out on a long day.
Cleaning it
Necoichi publishes hand wash and line dry, which is the honest constraint on a fabric travel box: no dishwasher, no machine. Empty it fully before it goes back in the case, and let it dry completely — a folded damp travel box is the reason some of them only get used once.

Sleepypod's Air publishes 21 inches of interior at full extension. This publishes 25. Four extra inches is the difference between a cat curled and a cat stretched out, which matters when the whole point is a long, slow trip rather than a short one to the vet.
