Keeping a cat indoors is the safe choice. It is also a choice that takes away a whole world of smells, sounds and air. A catio is the most complete way to give some of it back.
What the outdoors adds
The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative treats environmental enrichment as essential for indoor cats, and some of the best enrichment is simply the outdoors: moving air, birdsong, the smell of rain. A window gives a cat sight. A catio adds everything else, behind mesh.
There are three ways to do it: a fixed enclosure, a harness, and a stroller. They differ in how much training they need, how much of your time they take, and how much of the outdoors they reach.
How much space the catio actually gives
Interior floor: 57.5 x 25.1 = 1,443 square inches, about 10 square feet.
Platforms: six at 13.8 x 9.8 = 135 square inches each, so about 811 square inches of perch — more than half as much again as the floor, stacked up the walls.
Mesh: a 0.5 inch grid. Small enough that a paw cannot get through to a passing bird, and small enough to keep out most animals that would bother a cat.

The picks
The PawHut catio is the most complete answer. It publishes the safety-critical specification, the mesh size; it gives six platforms of vertical territory; and it has a roof. The fir frame needs treating to last outdoors, the platforms are small for a large cat, and assembly is substantial. The most important decision is not the model but the connection: a catio a cat can walk into from a window gets used.

Setting up a catio well
- Connect it to the house. Through a window or a cat door, so the cat chooses when to go out.
- Secure the base. Anchor it so it cannot be lifted or tipped.
- Shade and water. Always, and bring the cat in during extreme heat or cold.
- Check what grows nearby. Nothing reaching through or beside the mesh should be toxic to cats.
- Inspect the mesh regularly. Look for gaps at joins, especially after storms.
If you have no outdoor space
Not every home has room for a catio. The next best thing is bringing the outdoors to a window:

A strap harness concentrates a bolting cat's force on two narrow bands. A vest spreads the same force across the whole ribcage, so no single point reaches the pressure at which a cat can lever a leg through. That is the mechanism -- not a claim about how tight you can pull it.
