Harness listings all claim to be escape proof. The claim is untestable and every brand makes it, so it carries no information. What does carry information is the geometry and the published size chart.
Vest against strap
A cat escapes a harness by reversing. It backs up, the harness slides forward, and at some point a shoulder gets through the front band. Everything about harness design is downstream of that one motion.
A strap harness resists it with two narrow bands, so all the force from a bolting cat lands on a small area — and the cat only has to defeat one point. A vest spreads the same force across the whole ribcage, so no single point reaches the pressure where a leg can lever through. The Kitty Holster is a cotton vest with wide hook-and-loop closures for exactly this reason.

rabbitgoo publishes a medium chest range of 11.0 to 11.5 inches. That is a half-inch window — narrower than the measurement error you get pulling a tape around a cat that does not want a tape pulled around it.
PetSafe goes the other way and overlaps: medium is 10.5 to 14 inches, large is 13 to 18. A cat measuring 13 to 14 inches qualifies for both. PetSafe publishes the tiebreak — take the smaller — which is the right call.
Fitting it, once it arrives
- Two fingers, flat, under the band. Flat, not stacked. Stacked fingers is roughly twice as loose as it feels.
- Check the neck opening against the cat’s head. rabbitgoo publishes this explicitly: if head girth is smaller than the minimum neck girth, the cat can pull straight through. Head girth must be larger.
- Check it again after a week. Hook-and-loop collects fur and loses grip, and every fabric harness gives a little as it settles.
- Never clip a leash to a collar for walking. A cat that bolts against a collar takes the whole force on its throat.
What a bungee leash is actually for
PetSafe pairs its harness with a bungee leash running 40.5 to 67 inches, and it is not a gimmick. The moment a harness fails is almost always a sudden bolt: the cat hits the end of a fixed leash, the shock load spikes, and the harness has one instant at maximum force to survive.
A bungee spreads that spike over a longer interval, so peak force is lower. The same principle as a climbing rope. It does not make a badly fitted harness safe; it removes the single worst load a well-fitted one has to survive.
Is harness walking worth it at all
For some cats, genuinely yes. The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative frames indoor enrichment around giving cats access to varied stimulation, and a supervised outdoor walk is a large amount of novel stimulation for a cat that wants it.
For other cats it is a source of stress dressed as a treat. A cat that flattens and freezes when the harness goes on is telling you something clear.
