Litter-Robot 4 vs PETLIBRO Luma
These two publish almost nothing in common, which makes the comparison unusually easy: each one states the figure the other leaves blank. Then there is the subscription.
Affiliate disclosure: we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we rank first — here is how we're funded.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty litter boxes. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specs, read the manuals, and do the arithmetic on what this gear costs to run and how it behaves once there is more than one cat using it. Every spec is linked to the document it came from. Prices are checked daily — last verified November 5, 2026. Here is exactly how we pick.
The interesting thing about this pairing is not the price gap. It is that the two makers publish almost disjoint specification sheets: every figure Whisker leaves blank, PETLIBRO states, and the one figure Whisker does state is the one PETLIBRO omits. That makes the decision unusually legible — once you add the part PETLIBRO puts in writing and most reviews skip, which is that the AI is a subscription.
Each one states the figure the other hides

Makers' published figures from the sources named below, read 2026-11-05. Every 'not published' is a finding rather than a research gap -- and in this pairing the blanks fall on opposite sides of the table.
Read it down the two columns rather than across. Whisker has sold the Litter-Robot for years and still publishes no waste capacity and no cat count for the 4, which are the two numbers a multi-cat household actually needs; we say so on every page where it appears. PETLIBRO publishes both, and then declines to publish a power rating, which is the one figure that lets anybody compute a running cost.
The weight ranges miss each other at both ends
Litter-Robot 4: 3-25 lb, published by Whisker.
PETLIBRO Luma: 2.2-22 lb, published by PETLIBRO — with a published caveat at the bottom: “For the safety of kittens, nursing cats, and cats under 2.2 pounds, please turn off the auto-clean function and use the manual clean button instead.”
Overlap where both clean automatically: 3 to 22 lb. Above it, a 24 lb cat is inside the Litter-Robot’s published range and outside the Luma’s. Below it, the Luma nominally accepts a 2.2 lb kitten and PETLIBRO itself tells you to run the box manually for one — which is a fair thing to publish, and it means the headline range is wider than the automatic range.
The subscription, in PETLIBRO’s own words
The Luma is sold on AI waste analysis: it claims to tell solid from loose, number one from number two, and to track each of up to ten recognized cats. That is a genuinely new kind of claim in this category. It is also, per the listing, a paid service:
- “Livestreaming is free, but the AI analysis and recording require a Video Cloud AI subscription.”
- “Please note this cat litter box self cleaning device does not support SD cards” — so there is no offline recording route around it.
The same listing sells this box at $569.99 and an otherwise identical variant at $629.99 whose only stated difference, in PETLIBRO’s own comparison row, is “90 Day Free Video Cloud AI”. Every feature tick in that row is the same on both.
So PETLIBRO is pricing three months of its own cloud service at $60 — an implied $20 a month — while publishing no price for the subscription itself. Treat that as the honest estimate of what the headline feature costs to keep, and note that the box still scoops, seals and livestreams without it.
Whisker’s equivalent is a hardware consumable rather than a service: the Litter-Robot 4 locks you to $25 per 25-pack of waste-drawer liners plus a monthly carbon filter, with no app subscription. Our running costs page works that arithmetic out across the category. The trade here is unusually clean: one maker locks the liner, the other locks the software.
Shape, floor and the open top
Litter-Robot 4: 22 x 27 = 594 sq in at 29.5 in tall.
PETLIBRO Luma: 23.3 x 22.5 = 524 sq in at 28.1 in tall.
The Luma takes 70 sq in less floor — 11.7 percent — and sits 1.4 inches lower, while weighing 9 lb more empty. On carpet, PETLIBRO directs you to an optional Carpet Stability Base listed at $19.99, which is a real line item if the box is going on a rug.
The shapes differ more than the numbers suggest. The Litter-Robot is an enclosed globe entered through a published 15.75 inch square aperture; the Luma is an open top with a removable step. Our covered against uncovered page starts from the preference evidence rather than from the hardware, and it matters here: a cat that refuses a hooded box may take the open one, and a cat that wants walls may not.
The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative guidance on litter boxes is about count, size and placement, and neither of these appliances changes it. One self-cleaning box in one room is still one box in one room — our box count page is the free version of this purchase.
Which one, and for whom
- A documented multi-cat house: the PETLIBRO Luma. It is the only one of the two that publishes a waste capacity, a days-between-empties figure and a cat count, and it costs less. Skip it if a cat is over 22 lb, or if paying monthly for the feature you bought it for is not acceptable.
- A big cat, or no running services: the Litter-Robot 4. A published 3-25 lb range, the biggest published entryway in this comparison, and no subscription at all. Skip it if you need to know how often you will be emptying it with three cats, because Whisker still will not tell you.
- Neither, if the honest answer is more boxes: two plain boxes in two rooms beat one appliance in one room on every count the welfare guidance uses, and whether an automatic box is worth it makes that case properly.
Both of these are expensive machines in a category where the cheap answer often wins. What this page can tell you honestly is which figures exist before you spend: with the Luma you know how much waste it holds and how many cats it claims, and you know the AI is rented. With the Litter-Robot 4 you know what it costs to run and what size cat it accepts, and you do not know how often you will be emptying it.

The biggest entryway and the largest published cat-weight range of the enclosed units, and the only one whose maker publishes an actual power-supply spec you can cost out.

| Cat weight range | 3-25 lb |

Whisker's own spec sheet accepts a 15 V supply between 0.4 A and 1.0 A. Take the 1.0 A ceiling: 15 W x 24 h x 365 = 131.4 kWh, x $0.1834 = $24.10. That assumes the motor runs flat out every hour of the year, which it does not -- so the real figure is well below this. The consumables are the actual cost.
What the specs favor
- Largest published entryway of the enclosed units here, at 15.75 inches square
- Whisker publishes a real power-supply rating, so running cost is computable
- Cat weight range published as 3-25 lb
- Three-year extended warranty available at purchase
What they don't
- Whisker does not publish globe or waste-drawer capacity, which is the number that actually decides how often you empty it with three cats
- Waste drawer liners are a proprietary consumable at $25 per 25-pack
- Carbon filter is a separate monthly consumable
- Whisker publishes no cat-count rating for this unit at all, so sizing it for a multi-cat house is guesswork
You have five cats. Whisker rates the newer Litter-Robot 5 for up to five and this one carries no published cat-count rating at all -- buying the older unit for a bigger household is guessing.

PETLIBRO Luma Automatic Litter Box
PETLIBRO · Automatic litter box · Our score 8.0/10

#ad Price as of November 5, 2026. Prices move; we check daily. How we're funded.
The only automatic box here that publishes a waste capacity, a cat count AND a per-cat weight range -- and the only one whose headline feature, the AI waste analysis, is a subscription its own listing tells you about.
Published specs
| Footprint / height | 23.3" L x 22.5" W x 28.1" H |
|---|---|
| Weight, empty | 33.1 lb |
| Waste bin | Sealed 2.9 gallon (11 L); maker says up to 14 days for a single cat |
| Published cat count | Up to 10 cats, with multi-cat recognition from any angle |
| Cat weight range | 2.2-22 lb |
| Published safety limit | PETLIBRO: "For the safety of kittens, nursing cats, and cats under 2.2 pounds, please turn off the auto-clean function and use the manual clean button instead" |
| Entry | Open top, with a removable step included |
| Litter | All clumping litters -- clay, tofu, mixed (maker) |
| Odor control | Built-in fan through a carbon deodorizer; maker claims 97% of odors eliminated, "verified by third-party lab testing" with no lab or method named |
| Safety sensors | Visual, weight and infrared motion; cleaning pauses if a cat is detected |
| AI features | Subscription. PETLIBRO: "Livestreaming is free, but the AI analysis and recording require a Video Cloud AI subscription", and the box does not support SD cards |
| On carpet | Maker directs you to its optional Carpet Stability Base, listed at $19.99 |
| Power draw | Not published |
| Warranty | 2 years, plus a published 90-day risk-free trial |
| Model | PLLB001 |
The same listing sells this box at $569.99 and a variant at $629.99 whose only stated difference, in PETLIBRO's own comparison row, is "90 Day Free Video Cloud AI". Every feature tick is identical. So PETLIBRO is pricing three months of the cloud service at $60 against its own base model -- about $20 a month implied -- and it publishes no price for the subscription itself. Budget for it as an unknown, or buy the base box and keep the free livestream.
What the specs favor
- Publishes a sealed 2.9 gallon waste capacity and a 14-day single-cat figure, which Whisker publishes for neither of its boxes
- Publishes a cat count (up to 10) and a per-cat weight range (2.2-22 lb)
- Takes any clumping litter, including tofu, so there is no proprietary litter or tray
- Three independent safety sensors published -- visual, weight and infrared
- 2-year warranty and a published 90-day risk-free trial, against one year on the Litter-Robot 4
- 11.7 percent less floor than the Litter-Robot 4 and 1.4 inches shorter
What they don't
- The headline AI analysis and all recording need a Video Cloud AI subscription, which PETLIBRO states but does not price
- No published power draw at all, so unlike the Litter-Robot 4 its electricity cannot be costed
- The 97% odor claim names no lab and no method
- Its own listing says to disable auto-cleaning for kittens, nursing cats and anything under 2.2 lb
- Caps at 22 lb, so a 24 lb cat that the Litter-Robot 4 accepts is out of range
- On carpet the maker sends you to a separate $19.99 stability base
You have a cat over 22 lb, or you want the camera features without a running subscription. The weight ceiling is published and the subscription is published, and neither is negotiable.
