Buying for a large breed is an exercise in elimination, and it is quick: two published numbers remove most of the category before price enters the conversation.
The two numbers
- Published cat weight range. If your cat is above it, the manufacturer has told you not to buy it. This is not a soft guideline on a machine with a rotating drum and a weight sensor.
- Entryway and interior geometry. A large cat needs to get in, turn, and dig without touching the sides. An enclosed globe constrains all three.

Weight ranges and entryway dimensions are the manufacturers' own published figures.
The Neakasa M1 has the widest published range in the category by a clear margin — 33 lb against 30 and 25 — and it is the only open-top automatic unit, which means a long-bodied cat is not negotiating a curved interior. That combination is why it leads here.
The number nobody publishes: usable interior floor
Every automatic box publishes an external footprint and none publishes the usable interior floor. That matters more for a large cat than for any other, because the Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative requirement is that the cat can stand on all fours and turn around.
What we would actually do
For a household with a large breed, a mixed setup beats an all-automatic one. One very large open pan as the primary box — unrestricted geometry, the most usable floor per dollar — plus an automatic unit rated above your cat’s weight for the convenience.

11.23 L bin. Whisker's own guidance for its comparable drawer is emptying twice a week for two cats, i.e. roughly 3.5 days per two cats. Scale that to three and the bin needs emptying about every 4 days on published volumes -- an extrapolation from a competitor's published interval, not a measurement of this unit.

- Publishes an operating noise figure of 50 dB or less
- Open top, which is the design cats are documented to prefer

30.18 x 20.13 = 607 sq inches of external footprint. Two cats sharing it get roughly 304 sq inches each -- still more than a whole standard jumbo pan gives one cat. That is why one very large box beats two small ones when floor space is tight.

Whisker's own spec sheet accepts a 15 V supply between 0.4 A and 1.0 A. Take the 1.0 A ceiling: 15 W x 24 h x 365 = 131.4 kWh, x $0.1834 = $24.10. That assumes the motor runs flat out every hour of the year, which it does not -- so the real figure is well below this. The consumables are the actual cost.
