Two top-entry boxes from the same manufacturer publish entry holes that differ by half again. That number, not the box, is why cats refuse them.

Top-entry boxes solve tracking better than anything short of a mat, and they get returned more than any other format. Both facts trace to one published number that almost nobody compares.
The entry hole is the whole product
IRIS Top Entry Large: 9 x 10.5 in = 94.5 square inches.
IRIS Premium Top Entry square: 7.9 x 7.9 in = 62.4 square inches.
The large offers 51 percent more aperture than its own stablemate. A cat sizing up a hole it has to drop through is making a decision about that number, and the two boxes are not the same proposition.

The Modkat XL is here because it publishes something the others do not: both a top and a front entry on the same box. That turns the format’s single biggest weakness — a cat that cannot or will not jump — into a configuration choice rather than a return.
Why the format wins on tracking
Litter leaves a box on paws. In an open pan the cat steps from litter straight onto your floor, so the floor is the first surface the litter meets. In a top-entry box the cat has to climb onto the lid, and the lid is grooved for exactly this reason: it is a deliberate intermediate surface that takes the litter first.
It is the same principle as a litter mat, with two advantages. It is unavoidable rather than optional, and it sits over the box, so what it catches falls back in rather than needing shaking out.
Who should not buy one
The height that makes the format work is the height that rules it out for a large share of cats. The IRIS large stands 14.62 inches, so every visit is a jump up and a controlled descent.
- Arthritic and senior cats. This is the clearest exclusion. A cat that finds the box painful will find somewhere else.
- Cats recovering from surgery or injury. Temporarily, but temporarily is enough to establish a new habit.
- Kittens. Under a certain size the jump is simply beyond them.
- Large and heavy breeds. Not because of the jump, but because 94.5 square inches of aperture is not generous for a wide-bodied cat.
Cornell Feline Health Center links litter box avoidance to lower urinary tract problems, which is why box refusal is not a tidiness issue. A box a cat will not use is worse than no box, because it looks like a box that is being provided.
The middle option nobody mentions
If you want enclosure without the jump, a domed box with a ramp is the compromise. Petmate’s Booda Dome publishes 22.5 by 22.5 by 19 inches with a stepped ramp entry and a built-in carbon filter, and the ramp does a fair share of the anti-tracking job that a top-entry lid does.
The cost is floor. At 506 square inches it is the largest footprint here by half again over the IRIS, and being round it does not tuck into a corner. In a small flat that is decisive, and our small-space page works through the footprint arithmetic properly.
Top entry in a multi-cat house
One thing to watch: an enclosed box has one exit. The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative describes multi-cat tension as largely territorial, and a box with a single choke point is a place a cat can be cornered — or believe it can be, which has the same effect.
If ambushing is happening in your house, the top-entry format makes it worse, not better. Follow the counts in how many boxes per cat and keep at least one open pan with sightlines in the mix.

Large: 9 x 10.5 = 94.5 square inches. IRIS's own Premium square model publishes 7.9 x 7.9 = 62.4. The large gives half again as much aperture. A cat that refuses a top-entry box has usually been offered the smaller hole.

Modkat rates its reusable liner at up to three months, so four a year. A ScoopFree needs twelve disposable trays in the same period, and the Litter-Robot around 156 drawer liners. Reusable is not a green talking point here, it is the cheapest consumable model of the three.
