Every small bathroom has a corner doing nothing. That is the entire argument for this shape, and it is a good one -- as long as you know what the triangle costs.
What the shape costs
Van Ness publishes 18 by 18 inches along the two wall sides of its corner pan. A triangle with two 18 inch sides covers half the square those walls describe: 18 x 18 / 2 = about 162 square inches, plus a little where the front edge curves out.
A Petmate Jumbo Pan is 22.05 x 16.55 = 365 square inches of rectangle.
So the corner box gives up more than half the floor to fit the corner. Whether that is a good deal depends entirely on whether the rectangle would fit at all.

The picks
The Van Ness Corner High-Sides pan is the pick. It is open, so there is no hood for a cat to object to, and its 9 inch walls do real work against scatter -- helped by the fact that two of those walls sit against the room’s own walls.
The Corner Enclosed box adds a hood and a zeolite air filter for a cat that sprays. Be careful with it: the Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative reports covered boxes concentrate odor and can be refused if they are not kept very clean, and a corner box has the least floor to play with of any shape.
The Petmate Jumbo Pan is here to keep the comparison honest. If your room can take 22 by 16.5 inches, it is more than twice the floor for less money. The corner shape is a fit solution, not an upgrade.

Cornell's guidance is one box more than you have cats. For three cats that is four boxes. The cheapest automatic box on this page is $269.99 -- four plain jumbo pans is a fraction of one of those, and four boxes beat one clever one every time.
