Best Cat Litter Mats (2026)

A mat smaller than the box it serves is decoration. Here is the geometry, and the one feature that changes the running cost.

A close-up of clumping cat litter granules

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty litter boxes. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specs, read the manuals, and do the arithmetic on what this gear costs to run and how it behaves once there is more than one cat using it. Every spec is linked to the document it came from. Prices are checked daily — last verified January 1, 1970. Here is exactly how we pick.

Litter mats are bought on looks and fail on geometry. The single question that decides whether one works is whether it is bigger than the box it serves, and most people buy one that is not.

Match the mat to the box, not to the room

The arithmetic — Mat against a real box footprint
IRIS XX-Large open-top box: 30.18 x 20.13 in = 607 sq in
Gorilla Grip 35 x 24 in = 840 sq in — larger in both directions
PetFusion ToughGrip XL 38 x 26 in = 988 sq in — larger still
PetFusion standard 30 x 23 in = 690 sq in — barely clears it

A 24 x 15 in mat under that box covers 59 percent of its length and misses both front corners entirely — which is where a cat steps out.

So the buying order is: measure the box, then buy the mat. Doing it the other way round is how households end up with a mat that looks tidy and changes nothing.

What a mat cannot fix

Tracking has two sources and a mat only addresses one of them.

  • Carried out on paws. This is what a mat catches, and it is the majority of tracking in a normal household.
  • Kicked over the side while digging. A mat catches some of this and misses the rest, because the litter is airborne past the mat edge. That is a wall-height problem — see the high-sided boxes.

Litter choice matters too. Dr. Elsey’s Ultra publishes heavier granules specifically to reduce tracking, while lightweight and corn-based litters travel further by simple physics. If tracking is your main complaint, the mat is only one of three levers.

The specification that decides whether you keep using it

Mats fail in practice because cleaning them is annoying. So read the published care instruction before buying, not after:

Published construction and cleaning
MatConstructionCleaningReturns litter?
PetFusion ToughGripOne piece FDA-grade siliconeShake, rinse, wipeYes -- side spout
Gorilla GripTwo-layer honeycomb, waterproofHand wash, air dry onlyNo -- empty to a bin

Both rows are the manufacturers' own published descriptions and care instructions.

The pour spout is the quiet winner. Every gram of litter a honeycomb mat traps is a gram you sweep into a bin; a spouted silicone tray returns it to the box. Over a year that is a meaningful share of a bag, and it is the reason the PetFusion leads despite the smaller catch area.

In a multi-cat house, one per box

Mats are per-box, not per-household. A three-cat home following the one-per-cat-plus-one guidance has four boxes, and a mat under one of them is catching a quarter of the problem. In a small flat especially, that is how litter ends up in every room — the math is in the small-apartment page.

Verdict

  • Best overall: PetFusion ToughGrip — silicone, genuinely cleanable, and the spout returns litter to the box.
  • Best catch area: Gorilla Grip, up to 47 by 35 inches, for a large box or a heavy digger.
  • Fix the source too: a high-sided box for kicked litter, and a heavier granule for carried litter.

Our arithmetic — Litter returned rather than binned
Most of it

The published side spout is the specification that matters. A honeycomb mat is emptied into a bin; a spouted silicone tray pours captured litter back into the box. Over a year that is a meaningful share of a bag you would otherwise have swept up and thrown away -- and it is the reason this one wins on running cost despite the higher purchase price.

What the specs favor

  • One piece of silicone -- nothing to delaminate or absorb odor
  • Published anti-microbial and hypoallergenic silicone
  • Side spout returns captured litter to the box
  • XL version has a 3-inch lip, which contains a genuine spill

What they don't

  • Smaller catch area than the Gorilla Grip jumbo
  • Silicone attracts dust and hair as well as litter
  • Costs more than a fabric or honeycomb mat

Your cat kicks litter several feet rather than tracking it on its paws. A 30-inch mat catches what is carried out, not what is thrown -- that is a high-sided box problem, not a mat problem.

Our arithmetic — Catch area vs a standard box footprint
840 sq in

35 x 24 = 840 sq inches. The IRIS XX-Large box footprint is 30.18 x 20.13 = 607 sq inches. The mat is larger than the box it sits under, which is the whole point -- a mat narrower than the box catches nothing at the corners where cats actually step off.

What the specs favor

  • Largest published catch area of the mats here
  • Two-layer honeycomb traps litter below the surface
  • Waterproof, so a leaked box does not reach the floor
  • Three published sizes, so it can be matched to the box

What they don't

  • Hand wash and air dry only -- not a throw-it-in-the-machine mat
  • Honeycomb holes need shaking or vacuuming, not just a wipe
  • 840 square inches is a lot of visible floor covered

You want to hose it down and hang it up wet. The published care instruction is air dry only, and a mat that lives in a damp utility room will not get that.

Our arithmetic — Floor area per cat, shared by two
About 304 sq in each

30.18 x 20.13 = 607 sq inches of external footprint. Two cats sharing it get roughly 304 sq inches each -- still more than a whole standard jumbo pan gives one cat. That is why one very large box beats two small ones when floor space is tight.

What the specs favor

  • Largest published open-top footprint here at 30.18 x 20.13 inches
  • 13.12-inch walls with a scatter shield -- the combination that stops high sprayers
  • Open top, the configuration cats are documented to prefer
  • Takes any litter, no proprietary anything

What they don't

  • 607 square inches of floor is a lot of floor to give up
  • IRIS does not publish a weight capacity
  • High walls make it a genuine step up for a senior cat
Skip this one if

Your cat is elderly or arthritic. A 13-inch wall is a real climb, and a cat that starts avoiding the box because getting in hurts is a much worse problem than litter scatter.

Common questions

What is the best cat litter mat?
The PetFusion ToughGrip on cleanability and running cost -- one piece of FDA-grade silicone with a side spout that pours captured litter back into the box rather than into a bin. The Gorilla Grip is the pick if raw catch area matters more, at 35 by 24 inches.
How big should a litter mat be?
Wider than the box it sits under, in both directions. A mat narrower than the box catches nothing at the corners, which is exactly where cats step off. Measure the box footprint first, then buy the next size up.
Do litter mats actually work?
They capture what is carried out on paws, which is most of the tracking in a normal household. What they cannot do is catch litter that is kicked or flicked over the side of the box during digging -- that is a wall-height problem and needs a high-sided box.
Are silicone or honeycomb litter mats better?
Silicone is easier to clean and can pour litter back into the box; honeycomb traps more granules below the surface and comes in larger sizes. If you will realistically rinse a mat, silicone wins; if you will vacuum it, honeycomb is fine.
How do you clean a cat litter mat?
Follow the maker's instruction, because they differ. Gorilla Grip publishes hand wash with mild detergent and air dry only. The PetFusion silicone can be shaken out, rinsed and wiped, and its side spout returns the captured litter to the box.
