What Happens to an Automatic Feeder in a Power Cut
The feeder you leave a cat with for a weekend has a failure mode. Most listings do not describe it, so here is what to check before you go.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty litter boxes. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specs, read the manuals, and do the arithmetic on what this gear costs to run and how it behaves once there is more than one cat using it. Every automatic feeder eventually fails. That is not a criticism of any brand, it is what mechanisms do. The useful question is not whether it fails but what state it fails into, and almost no listing answers that.
The four failure modes
- Power loss. The obvious one. On a mains-only feeder, dispensing stops, and on many models the schedule is lost too, so it does not resume when power returns.
- Battery exhaustion. The quiet one. A battery feeder does not announce that its cells are low; it just stops one morning.
- Jam. The common one. A bridge of kibble forms over the auger and the motor turns against nothing. The app reports a successful dispense because the motor ran.
- Connectivity loss. The misunderstood one. The feeder usually keeps dispensing; what you lose is the ability to see that it did.

Manufacturers' published power arrangements. Note that the battery-only design is the one with no power-cut failure mode at all.
The Cat Mate C500 is the counter-intuitive answer here. Being battery-only, it has no mains dependency to lose — and because it uses a rotating tray of five sealed compartments rather than an auger and a hopper, it also has no jam mode. It cannot dispense more than five meals, and that is the honest trade.

Why a jam is worse than a power cut
A power cut is visible. You come home, clocks are flashing, you check the feeder. A jam is invisible: the motor runs, the app logs a dispense, the notification arrives, and nothing came out.
- Kibble shape matters. Large or irregular kibble bridges over an auger far more readily than small uniform pieces.
- Humidity matters. Damp kibble sticks. A hopper filled in August behaves differently from one filled in February.
- Fill level matters. A nearly empty hopper bridges more easily, because there is less weight above the bridge to collapse it.
- Test with the actual food. Run a week of scheduled dispenses with the food your cat eats before you rely on it, not with a sample.
What a camera does and does not buy you
A camera feeder closes the jam hole, because you can see whether food came out and whether a cat came to eat it. That is a real improvement over trusting a dispense log.

Building a setup that fails safe
The principle is redundancy, not reliability. Two independent things should have to fail before a cat goes without.
- Feeder plus a bowl. Leave a normal meal in a normal bowl. It is the simplest backup there is and it has no failure mode.
- Water in at least two places, not from one fountain. A fountain is a pump on the mains. A plain bowl of water in another room is not.
- Battery cells fresh before you go, not merely present.
- A person with a key. The only component in the whole system that can notice a cat has stopped eating.

24 cups of hopper. Three cats eating half a cup each per day is 1.5 cups daily, so about 16 days. The slow-feed setting spreads one meal over 15 minutes, which is the published feature that matters if one of your cats inhales food and then takes the other's.
