How to Clean an Automatic Cat Feeder
The bowl is the part everyone washes and the hopper is the part that actually goes rancid. They run on completely different clocks.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty litter boxes. We have not tested any, and we say so. A feeder has three zones and one rule. The zones are the bowl, the food path and the electronics. The rule is that water belongs in exactly one of them.

Why the hopper is the real job
Dry cat food carries fat, and fat leaves a film on every surface it slides across. That film builds on the inside of the hopper and the chute, where you cannot see it, and it oxidizes.
The result is fresh kibble arriving in the bowl carrying the smell of food that has been sitting in the machine for weeks. It is the most common reason a cat that used a feeder happily starts leaving portions.
PETLIBRO publishes a 5 L hopper and PetSafe a 24 cup one. A big hopper is a convenience and a liability in the same object: the longer food sits in it, the more the residue matters, which is why the clean is timed to an empty hopper rather than to a date.
The monthly strip, in order
- Let the hopper run down. Plan the clean for the day it empties rather than tipping good food out.
- Power down and remove batteries. Mains out at the wall, backup cells out of the compartment. The power and backup page explains why those cells are there in the first place.
- Separate what the manual says is removable. On the Smart Feed that is the lid, hopper, bowl and holder, all published as top-shelf dishwasher safe.
- Wash and rinse thoroughly. Warm water, plain unscented dish soap, and a bottle brush for the chute if yours is reachable.
- Dry completely. This is the step people rush. Damp kibble bridges into a plug, and a plug is a missed meal while you are away.
- Wipe the housing. Damp cloth, never a wet one, and nothing dripping near the motor or the sensor windows.
- Reassemble and test a portion before you rely on it. A test dispense is ten seconds and it catches a misseated hopper.
Wet food and microchip bowls

24 cups of hopper. Three cats eating half a cup each per day is 1.5 cups daily, so about 16 days. The slow-feed setting spreads one meal over 15 minutes, which is the published feature that matters if one of your cats inhales food and then takes the other's.

Sure Petcare states 6 months from a set of 4 C cells, so 8 cells a year per feeder. In a three-cat house you need one feeder per cat on a controlled diet -- 24 cells a year for three. That is the running cost nobody mentions.
