The honest case for a camera feeder is narrower than the marketing, and better than you would think. It is a diagnostic instrument. It will tell you things about your household you cannot otherwise find out. It will not fix any of them.
What the camera is genuinely good for
In a multi-cat house, the questions that are hardest to answer are all questions about who does what when nobody is watching:
- Which cat is actually eating the food. Weight changes tell you something is wrong months after it started; a camera tells you at the bowl.
- How fast. A cat that inhales a meal in ninety seconds and then stands over the other bowl is a pattern you can see and act on.
- Whether one cat is guarding. Resource guarding is usually undramatic — a stare from a doorway, a cat that waits and then walks away. It is easy to miss in person and obvious on playback.
- Whether a cat has stopped eating. Which is a veterinary question, and one worth catching early.
That last one is the strongest argument on this page, and it is worth being careful about: noticing a change is useful, interpreting it is not our job. Anything sudden goes to a vet.

Diagnose first, then buy the fix
- Use the camera to establish what is actually happening over a week or two. Do not assume you already know.
- If the answer is food stealing, buy microchip feeders — one per controlled cat.
- If the answer is speed, use a slow-feed setting or move part of the ration into a foraging toy.
