Portion control sounds like a solved problem until you try to set a feeder against the number on your food bag. Most feeders measure in “portions” with no volume attached, which makes that translation impossible.

All figures are the manufacturers' published specifications. A feeder that advertises 'up to 39 portions' with no volume attached is not in this comparison, because there is nothing to compare.
The SureFeed row looks like a failure and is not — it is a different product doing a different job. It is a sealed bowl that opens for one registered cat, which is allocation rather than portioning. If your problem is one cat eating another’s ration, no amount of portioning precision helps and the microchip approach is the only fix.
Setting one properly
Speed is a portion problem too
A precisely portioned meal inhaled in ninety seconds still produces a cat that is hungry an hour later, and sometimes one that brings it straight back up. PetSafe publishes a slow-feed setting that spreads a single meal over 15 minutes, which is the only mechanical answer in this comparison.
The non-mechanical answer is to make the cat work for it. A foraging toy turns the same ration into an activity and slows eating without any hardware — see the puzzle feeder picks, and note that food fed through a puzzle should come out of the daily total rather than on top of it.
Before you rely on one
