Free feeding is cheaper, easier and hides the single most important signal a cat gives you.

The argument for free feeding is convenience and it is a real one. The argument against is not really about weight. It is about what a full bowl stops you from seeing.

The information argument
Two cats share a bowl kept topped up. One stops eating on Monday. The other eats a little more because there is more available, so the bowl empties at roughly the usual rate.
You notice on Thursday, when the cat that stopped eating has visibly lost condition. Three days lost, and in a cat that is a long time.
With two stations and measured meals, you would have seen an untouched bowl on Monday morning.

The middle ground most people land on
A programmable feeder splitting the daily ration into four or five small meals gets most of what a grazing cat wants while keeping the portion control and the signal. PetSafe’s Smart Feed publishes a 24 cup hopper and portioning in real units, which is what makes that arrangement practical.
The Cat Mate C500 takes the other approach — five sealed compartments with ice packs, which means wet food is on the table. It cannot be topped up remotely and it cannot jam, and those two facts go together.
Multi-cat makes the decision for you

Switching without a fight
- Start by putting the same total amount out at fixed times.
- Once the times are established, split it into more, smaller meals.
- Only then adjust the total, and only with veterinary input.

24 cups of hopper. Three cats eating half a cup each per day is 1.5 cups daily, so about 16 days. The slow-feed setting spreads one meal over 15 minutes, which is the published feature that matters if one of your cats inhales food and then takes the other's.

Sure Petcare states 6 months from a set of 4 C cells, so 8 cells a year per feeder. In a three-cat house you need one feeder per cat on a controlled diet -- 24 cells a year for three. That is the running cost nobody mentions.
