Cats and dogs coexist fine in most houses. The friction is almost entirely about resources the dog can reach and the cat would rather it did not — food, litter, and somewhere to be left alone.
Sort by geometry, not by training
You cannot reliably train a dog out of a litter box it finds interesting. What you can do is build openings a cat passes and a dog does not, and put the cat’s resources behind them. That is a measuring exercise, and the three products here publish the measurements.
The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative lists hiding places and elevated resting places among an indoor cat’s basic needs. In a dog household, those need to be places the dog genuinely cannot follow — which usually means up, or behind something with a small hole in it.

The sizing arithmetic
The three openings step down in size: 94.5 square inches for the IRIS top hole (9 x 10.5), 64 square inches for the Carlson gate door (8 x 8), and about 33 square inches for the PetSafe flap (5.75 x 5.75).
A cat passes all three comfortably. What differs is which dogs they exclude — and the honest answer is that the flap excludes most, the gate door excludes medium and large breeds, and the top hole excludes any dog that cannot climb onto the box and reach down into it.
Measure your dog at the shoulder and across the skull before you buy. A 64 square inch opening is a wall to a labrador and a doorway to a dachshund.
The picks
The Carlson Extra Tall gate is the pick, because it solves the general problem rather than one instance of it: 36 inches of all-steel gate across an opening of about 29 to 37 inches, with an 8 by 8 inch pet door so the cat comes and goes while the dog stays out, plus a 16.5 inch walk-through door so you are not climbing over it. Behind it you can put litter, food and a bed at once. The honest cons: pressure mounting is not for the top of stairs, a determined jumper can clear 36 inches, and a small dog may simply use the pet door.
The IRIS top-entry litter box is the targeted fix for the most common complaint, and the geometry is the whole product: a 9 by 10.5 inch hole in the lid, set off-center so the cat drops in rather than steps through, with a grooved lid that catches litter on the way out. The honest cons: top entry excludes some cats too — kittens, heavy cats and arthritic seniors — and IRIS does not publish an interior floor measurement.
The PetSafe interior cat door is the permanent version of the gate idea: a 5.75 inch square flap fitted into an interior door, with a two-way manual lock and a published fit for doors half an inch to two inches thick. It gives the cat a whole room the dog cannot enter. The honest cons: it means cutting a hole in a door, the published pet weight is up to 15 lb, and a manual lock is only as good as your memory.
The layout that prevents most of it
- Feed the cat up high. A counter or shelf the dog cannot reach removes the daily flashpoint for free.
- Put the litter behind an opening, not in an open corner of a shared room.
- Give the cat an escape route at height in every shared room — our vertical space plan applies directly, with the dog as the thing being escaped.
- Keep water away from the dog’s bowl, so the cat is not queueing behind a dog to drink.
- Make one room genuinely dog-free and put the cat’s bed, box and food in it if the household is tense.

Large: 9 x 10.5 = 94.5 square inches. IRIS's own Premium square model publishes 7.9 x 7.9 = 62.4. The large gives half again as much aperture. A cat that refuses a top-entry box has usually been offered the smaller hole.
