Ask why a cat is being fed slower and the answer is usually the same: it eats too fast, then brings it back up, or it finishes in a minute and spends the rest of the evening asking for more. The right tool depends entirely on what is in the bowl.
Match the tool to the food
A slow-feeder bowl works by putting obstacles between a cat and loose kibble. That mechanism needs food that can fall into channels, so it does very little with wet food smeared across the surface.
A lick mat is the opposite: a flat sheet of texture that wet food gets pressed into, so the cat has to work it out of the grooves with its tongue. Put kibble on one and it just rolls off.

The picks
The LickiMat Felix is the pick, and mostly because of what it is made of and how it cleans. Human-grade, food-safe TPR is a published material rather than unnamed rubber, and dishwasher safe matters more here than on almost any other product -- wet food dried into fine grooves is genuinely annoying to scrub. At 51 square inches it is sized for a cat rather than scaled down from a dog mat.

Using one well
- Take the food out of the ration. A lick mat is a way of serving a meal, not an extra one.
- Spread thin. A thick blob is scooped up in one go; a thin layer across the whole mat is what takes time.
- Start easy. A cat that cannot get anything off it gives up.

- Wash it after every use. Wet food in warm grooves does not stay pleasant for long.
Why slow feeding is worth the trouble
The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative recommends food-delivery toys so that cats get something closer to a hunting and catching sequence at mealtimes rather than a bowl that is simply there. A lick mat is a mild version of that: it is not a hunt, but it is a few minutes of work for food instead of ten seconds of gulping.
- A cat that eats and then vomits is often eating too fast -- though a cat that vomits regularly needs a vet, not a gadget.
