All three are the manufacturers' own published figures. Publishing a low number is to a maker's credit -- most shelf sets publish nothing at all, which should be read as the least reassuring option.
The rating describes the shelf, not your wall
This is the part that actually determines safety, and no listing can tell you it. A shelf rated to 40 lb screwed into plasterboard with the supplied plastic plugs is not a 40 lb shelf. It is a 40 lb shelf attached to something rated for a picture frame.
- Into a stud, always. Find it with a detector, confirm by tapping, and mark the center rather than the edge.
- Design the run around the studs, not the other way round. This is the step people skip and then improvise past.
- Derate hard. A cat lands; it does not rest. That is a shock load several times body weight, repeatedly, for years.

Buy the route, not the pieces
