Best Air Purifiers for Cat Dander (2026)

Every box in this category shouts a coverage figure. Two of the three makers here publish the honest room size in the same sentence, and it is about a fifth of the number on the front.

Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty litter boxes. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specs, read the manuals, and do the arithmetic on what this gear costs to run and how it behaves once there is more than one cat using it. Every spec is linked to the document it came from. Prices are checked daily — last verified October 19, 2026. Here is exactly how we pick.

#ad Buy links are affiliate links. Prices come from a live daily check; where we have no verified price we say "check price" rather than print a stale one.

Buy the Winix 5510 if you are sizing a room properly: it is the only one here that publishes a full CADR triplet and its AHAM room size in the same breath as its headline number. Buy the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH if the problem is cat hair, because its first stage is a washable pre-filter and its filter interval is a published year. Buy the Levoit Core 300-P for a bedroom, where 24 dB and a $25.99 filter matter more than coverage. And read the coverage figure on all three as what it is — a one-air-change-per-hour claim.

The coverage figure is not the room it suits

This category is unusual: the makers publish the honest number and the marketing number side by side, and almost nobody reads the first one.

Winix states it plainly in a single bullet — AHAM Verifide at 392 sq ft, and “also cleans rooms up to 1,882 sq ft in 1 hour”. Levoit publishes the same shape with the mechanism attached: 222 sq ft refreshed 4.8 times per hour, or 1,073 sq ft refreshed once. Coway’s listing carries both numbers without reconciling them: 1,748 sq ft in the bullets, 361 sq ft in its own specification table.

The arithmetic — Why 4.8 air changes an hour and not one

1,882 / 392 = 4.8. 1,073 / 222 = 4.8. Two different makers, the same ratio, and Levoit names it: the small room is the one the air is cleaned 4.8 times an hour in.

That matters for exactly one reason. A cat is a continuous source — it is in the room, shedding and grooming, the whole time the purifier runs. Cleaning the air once an hour means the allergen a cat put into the air at 2:05 is still in it at 2:50. Cleaning it five times an hour means a much shorter residence time for everything the cat adds.

So the honest way to size one of these is to take the AHAM figure — 392, 361 or 222 sq ft on this page — and buy a unit whose AHAM figure covers the room you actually sit and sleep in. The 1,882 number describes a different, slower job.

Size an air purifier for cats on its AHAM room figure, not its headline coverage. The same listings publish both: Winix 5510 392 sq ft against 1,882; Levoit Core 300-P 222 sq ft at 4.8 air changes an hour against 1,073 at one; Coway AP-1512HH 361 sq ft in its spec table against 1,748 in its bullets. The ratio is 4.8x on both makers who state it. For cat hair specifically, buy a unit with a washable pre-filter — Coway and Winix publish one, Levoit seals its pre-filter inside the cartridge you replace every 6 to 8 months.

What a purifier had to publish to be here

  1. A standardized performance figure. A CADR number, an AHAM certification, or both. CADR is the only figure in this category that is independently tested to a standard rather than asserted.
  2. A named HEPA claim. A percentage at a stated particle size, and preferably a test standard behind it. “HEPA-type” with no number is not a specification.
  3. A published wattage. Without it the running cost cannot be computed, and on this page the electricity is the larger half of it.
  4. A published filter interval and a genuine filter price. The consumable is the product in every category on this site; a unit whose filter schedule is unpublished cannot be costed.
  5. Currently purchasable. Every pick was resolved and checked as in stock before it was written up.

We have not tested any of these and we do not have a particle counter. What we can do is read what each maker publishes, do the arithmetic, and be clear about where our competence stops — which on this page is early, because human allergy is a medical question.

Makers' published figures from the listings named in our sources, read on 2026-10-18. Filter prices are the listed price of the genuine filter at the time of writing and are quoted so the annual arithmetic below can be checked; live prices for the units themselves render on the cards.

The finding that inverts the rest of this site

On almost every appliance we cover, the consumable dwarfs the electricity. A fountain costs about $8.03 a year to run and about $97.44 a year in filters. A PetSafe ScoopFree costs more in disposable trays in a year than the box costs to buy. Air purifiers are the first category on this site where it goes the other way.

The arithmetic — A year of running each, at the published ceilings

Continuous running is 8,760 hours, at the EIA US residential average of 18.34 cents/kWh.

Coway, 77 W: 674.52 kWh = $123.71, plus $59.79 for the genuine set once a year = $183.50.

Winix, 65 W: 569.40 kWh = $104.42, plus $47.49, replaced every 12 months = $151.91.

Levoit, 56 W: 490.56 kWh = $89.97, plus $25.99 every 6 to 8 months, which is 1.5 to 2 filters a year = $128.96 to $141.95.

In every case electricity is about two thirds of the bill and roughly twice the filter cost. These are ceilings, not measurements: they assume the fan never leaves maximum, and all three units publish an Auto mode that throttles the fan when the air is clean. No maker publishes a per-mode wattage, so the ceiling is as close as anyone can honestly get — but the ratio holds at any duty cycle, because both halves scale differently and the filter half is fixed.

The practical consequence: in this category, a lower wattage is worth more than a cheaper filter. The Levoit’s filter is less than half the Coway’s, but 21 watts saves more money than the filter does.

Cat hair is a pre-filter question

Dander is a particle a HEPA filter is designed for. Cat hair is not: it is large, it mats, and it clogs the first surface it meets. Which surface that is decides whether hair costs you nothing or costs you a filter.

  • Coway publishes a washable pre-filter as stage one of four, with a filter indicator that tells you when to rinse it. Hair is caught by something you clean.
  • Winix publishes a washable fine-mesh pre-filter, and states its purpose exactly: the carbon stage “helps prolong the True HEPA Filter life”.
  • Levoit builds the pre-filter into the sealed 3-in-1 cartridge. Its own listing says the pre-filter “traps hairs, dust and large particles” — which is true, and it means hair shortens the life of the part you buy twice a year.

None of this is a reason to avoid the Levoit, which is the cheapest unit here to buy and to re-filter. It is a reason to put it somewhere other than next to the cat tree, and to take the hair out of circulation upstream — which is both cheaper and more effective than filtering it.

The fixes that come before the appliance

The EPA is unambiguous about the order, and it is the same order this site uses for litter box smell: “The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air”, with filtration as “an effective supplement to source control and ventilation”. A purifier is the supplement. These are the source control:

  1. Brush the cat more often. Hair caught in a brush never becomes airborne. Our cat brushes page ranks on tool type against coat, and the grooming schedule sets the cadence.
  2. Vacuum with a sealed filter, not just a strong motor. A vacuum that leaks fine dust is a redistribution system. Our vacuums for cat litter page covers sealed HEPA and why litter dust is the harder half of the job.
  3. Take hair off soft surfaces mechanically. Upholstery is the reservoir, and the EPA guidance is explicit that a portable air cleaner “cannot remove all pollutants from the air” — let alone the ones sitting in a sofa. Our hair removal tools page ranks the reusable options.
  4. Wash the bedding the cat sleeps on. Weekly, hot. Our how to wash a cat bed guide covers the constructions that survive it.
  5. Cut the dust at the box. Litter dust is a separate airborne problem with its own fix — see low-dust cat litter.
Where we stop. Whether a purifier will help a particular person’s cat allergy is a medical question, and this site has no doctors and no veterinarians. We publish appliance specifications and arithmetic. If somebody in the house is reacting to a cat, that conversation belongs with a physician — and no appliance on this page is a substitute for one.

Which one, and who should skip it

The Winix 5510 is the pick on published specification. It is the only unit here with a full CADR triplet (252 dust / 247 pollen / 253 smoke), it publishes its whole coverage ladder rather than one flattering end of it, it has a washable pre-filter, and its genuine filter is $47.49 on a published 12-month interval. For: a living room, sized honestly at 392 sq ft. Skip it if: you want nothing ionizing the air — PlasmaWave is part of the published stack and the listing does not document an off switch.

The Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is the pick for hair. A washable pre-filter, a True HEPA claim with a named third-party test standard, a one-year filter interval and a three-year warranty — the only published warranty on this page. For: a long-haired cat and a room you are not sleeping in. Skip it if: it is going in a bedroom, because 53.8 dB at full fan is the loudest published figure here, or if running cost is the deciding factor, because 77 W is the highest.

The Levoit Core 300-P is the pick for the room an allergic person spends eight unbroken hours in. 24 dB in Sleep Mode, 7.9 lb, under 15 inches tall, the cheapest filter here, and it publishes the air-change arithmetic the rest of the category hides. For: a bedroom at 222 sq ft. Skip it if: you are trying to treat an open-plan floor, or the cat sleeps on the bed — its pre-filter is sealed inside the consumable.

Placement, and the two mistakes that waste the purchase

  • Put it in the room you occupy, not the room the cat occupies. The EPA describes a portable air cleaner as filtering “a single room or area”. One unit in a hallway is a unit cleaning a hallway.
  • Do not box it in. These draw air through the sides or back and exhaust upward; against a wall behind a sofa, the published CADR is a laboratory figure and nothing more.
  • Run it continuously on Auto rather than hard for an hour. Continuous low-speed running is what the air-change arithmetic above assumes, and it is also what keeps the draw well below the nameplate ceiling.
  • Rinse the pre-filter on a schedule you actually keep. On the two units with a washable stage, that is the maintenance that protects the expensive filter. On the Levoit there is no such stage, so the cartridge interval is the whole schedule.

If the real problem is the litter box

A room purifier is the wrong instrument for litter odor. It dilutes a point source across a whole room, and the fixes that actually work on a box — scooping frequency, litter depth, washing the box at every full change — are free. Our litter box air purifiers page ranks the box-mounted units on filter media weight, which is the right specification for a unit that sits at the source, and the litter box smell guide runs the free fixes in order. Neither of those numbers is comparable with a CADR figure, which is why they are separate pages.

Our arithmetic — Year one, at the published ceilings
About $183.50 -- and two thirds of it is electricity

77 W running continuously is 0.077 kW x 8,760 h = 674.52 kWh, which at the EIA US residential average of 18.34 cents/kWh is $123.71 a year. Add one filter set at the listed $59.79 on the published up-to-one-year interval and year one is $183.50. That is a CEILING, not a measurement: it assumes the fan never drops off maximum, and Auto and Eco modes draw far less. The useful part is the ratio -- electricity is roughly TWICE the filter bill here, which inverts the pattern on the rest of this site, where a fountain's filters cost about twelve times its electricity.

What the specs favor

  • Washable pre-filter, so cat hair is caught by something you rinse rather than something you buy
  • Publishes a one-year filter interval, the longest of the three
  • True HEPA claim carries a named third-party test standard rather than just a percentage
  • CARB certified, which is the ozone-limit certification to look for in a room with a cat in it
  • 3-year warranty, against none published by the other two

What they don't

  • 77 W is the highest published draw here, and electricity is the bigger half of the running cost
  • 53.8 dB is the loudest published figure of the three at full fan
  • The listing publishes two different room figures (1,748 sq ft and 361 sq ft) without reconciling them
  • Genuine filter set is the dearest of the three at $59.79
  • No published CADR triplet, so it cannot be compared with the other two on the standard numbers

Our arithmetic — The two room sizes, side by side
392 sq ft against 1,882 -- a factor of 4.8

Winix publishes both numbers in the same bullet: AHAM Verifide at 392 sq ft, and 'also cleans rooms up to 1,882 sq ft in 1 hour'. The ladder underneath explains the gap -- 941 sq ft in 30 minutes, 627 in 20, 470 in 15 -- because coverage scales with how long you are willing to wait. 1,882 / 392 = 4.8, and Levoit publishes the same 4.8 relationship on its own unit (222 sq ft at 4.8 air changes an hour, 1,073 sq ft at one). For an allergic household the small number is the one to buy on: airborne allergen that is removed once an hour is airborne for most of that hour.

What the specs favor

  • Publishes a full CADR triplet, which is the only figure in this category that is independently standardized
  • Publishes the AHAM room size AND the headline figure, in the same sentence
  • Washable fine-mesh pre-filter, so hair does not consume the HEPA
  • A published 12-month filter interval at the lowest genuine-filter price here
  • 27 dB at its lowest setting, within 3 dB of the quietest unit on this page

What they don't

  • Runs a PlasmaWave ionizer and the listing does not say whether it can be switched off
  • The 0.01 micron / 99.99% claim is the maker's own and carries no named test standard
  • 65 W still makes electricity the larger half of the running cost
  • Tallest unit here at 25.2 in, which is furniture rather than a gadget
  • Genuine filter stock reads 'only 15 left' at the time of writing, so plan the reorder

Our arithmetic — Year one, at the published ceilings
About $129 to $142

56 W continuously is 0.056 kW x 8,760 h = 490.56 kWh = $89.97 a year at 18.34 cents/kWh. Filters are the published 6 to 8 months at the listed $25.99, which is 1.5 to 2 filters a year, or $38.99 to $51.98. Year one is therefore $128.96 to $141.95 at the ceiling -- the cheapest of the three to own, on a unit sized for a quarter of the floor area. Same caveat as the others: the wattage is a nameplate figure at continuous running and Sleep Mode draws far less, so read it as a ceiling.

What the specs favor

  • Publishes both room figures and names the air-change rate behind each, which nobody else here does
  • Cheapest unit here and the cheapest genuine filter at $25.99
  • 24 dB in Sleep Mode, the quietest published figure on this page
  • 7.9 lb and under 15 inches tall, so it actually fits on a nightstand
  • AHAM, CARB and ETL certifications all published

What they don't

  • The pre-filter is part of the sealed cartridge, so cat hair shortens the thing you pay for
  • 222 sq ft at a useful air-change rate is one bedroom, not a floor
  • 6 to 8 months is the shortest published filter interval of the three
  • The listing's own figures disagree on particle size: 0.1 micrometer in the spec table, 99.97% at 0.1-0.3 micron in the bullets
  • No washable stage at all, which is the one thing a cat house most wants

Common questions

What is the best air purifier for cat dander?
The Winix 5510 on published specification, because it is the only one of the three that publishes a full CADR triplet (252 dust / 247 pollen / 253 smoke) AND its AHAM room size of 392 sq ft next to the 1,882 sq ft headline. Buy the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH instead if cat hair is the problem rather than dander: its first stage is a washable pre-filter and its filter interval is a published year.
What size air purifier do I need for cat allergies?
Size on the AHAM figure, not the headline. These listings publish both: Winix 392 sq ft against 1,882, Levoit 222 sq ft against 1,073, Coway 361 sq ft in the spec table against 1,748 in the bullets. The big number is one air change an hour; the small one is roughly 4.8, which is the rate the makers themselves attach to it. Allergen removed once an hour is airborne for most of that hour.
Do air purifiers help with cat allergies?
We are not qualified to answer that for a person, and it is a question for a doctor. What we can report is the EPA's own position on the appliance: the most effective steps are reducing or removing the sources of pollutants and ventilating with clean outdoor air, with filtration as an effective supplement; a portable air cleaner filters a single room, and portable air cleaners cannot remove all pollutants from the air.
How much does an air purifier cost to run with cats?
More in electricity than in filters, which is unusual on this site. At the published wattages running continuously, and the US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh: $123.71 a year for the Coway at 77 W, $104.42 for the Winix at 65 W, $89.97 for the Levoit at 56 W. Genuine filters are $59.79 a year, $47.49 a year and $38.99 to $51.98 a year respectively. Those power figures are nameplate ceilings at full fan, so Auto and Sleep modes land lower.
Will an air purifier stop litter box smell?
Not reliably, and it is the wrong instrument. A room purifier dilutes odor across a whole room; a litter box is a point source, and the fixes that work on it are scooping frequency and litter depth, both free. Our litter box air purifier page ranks the box-mounted units on filter media weight, which is a different specification entirely.
