In a plain box, a clump only has to survive being lifted with a scoop. In an automatic box it has to survive being tumbled through a sieve or dragged across a bed by a rake. That is a much harder test, and it is why litter choice matters more here than anywhere else in the category.

A clump that has not set hard breaks up during the cycle. The fragments fall back through the sieve into the clean litter, so the bed gets progressively contaminated while the drawer stays suspiciously empty. Owners read that as the machine not working. It is usually the litter.

Hard clumping versus what cats prefer
There is a tension here worth naming. The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative reports that most cats prefer fine-grained, unscented litter and that many are deterred by scented or deodorant products. In an automatic box that tension eases slightly, because waste is removed from the bed within minutes rather than sitting until you scoop.
