The most common kitten litter mistake is buying a kitten litter box. It works for about four months, then you are buying another one and asking the cat to change boxes.
You are buying for two different cats
The kitten you bring home needs an entry it can step over on short legs. The cat it becomes needs a floor big enough to turn around and dig. A good kitten box meets both, and the easiest way to do that is to buy the adult-sized box with the lowest entry you can find.

The entry is what matters now
KittyGoHere publishes a 3 inch entry on every size. The small box is 20 x 15 x 5 inches for cats up to 6 lb; the large is 24 x 20 x 5 inches for cats up to 20 lb. Same entry, four times the weight range.
Petmate’s Jumbo Pan has a 6.5 inch wall all the way round. That is twice the step of the KittyGoHere entry, and it is a real climb for a very small kitten.
Necoichi’s portable box is 15 x 11 x 5.1 inches: 165 square inches of floor, less than half the Jumbo Pan’s. Small enough to be easy for a kitten; too small to be the adult cat’s main box.

The picks
KittyGoHere’s large box is sold for senior cats, and the reason it suits them is the reason it suits kittens: a 3 inch entry that asks for no climb at all. Buy the large rather than the small. The small is rated to 6 lb, which most kittens pass well before their first birthday.
Petmate’s Jumbo Pan is the budget answer and the best second box. Open, simple, big enough for an adult cat, and cheap enough that buying two is not a decision. For a very young kitten, set it up with a shallow layer of litter and a small step, or wait a few weeks before making it the main box.
Necoichi’s portable box is for the first weeks and for later travel. It folds flat, the liner is waterproof, and at 5.1 inches it is an easy step. It is a starter box and a spare, not a lifetime box.
Setting up the first weeks
- A box in the kitten’s room. Most kittens start in one room, and our introduction guide covers why. The box goes in there, away from food and bed.
- A shallow layer of litter. Enough to dig, not enough to wade through.
- Show the box after meals and naps. Put the kitten in gently; do not hold it there.
- Add the second box as the kitten gets the run of the house. One per cat plus one is the standard guidance.
- Keep the litter the kitten learned on, at least at first. The litter question for a young kitten is one to settle with your vet or the breeder or shelter the kitten came from.
What to hold off on
- Automatic boxes. Whisker publishes a 3 to 25 lb range for the Litter-Robot 4. A kitten below the minimum may not be detected, which makes this a safety question. Our automatic box roundup is the page for later.
- Top-entry boxes. A jump in and a jump out, with a lid in the way.
- High-sided boxes. Walls of 10 inches or more suit an adult that sprays high, not a kitten that has to climb in.
- Hoods. A flap to push past is one more thing to learn. Add one later if you want it.
A kitten joining an adult cat
In a house with an established cat, the kitten needs its own box in its own room first, and the adult’s boxes stay exactly where they are. Our kitten and adult cat page covers the introduction. A standard high-sided pan asks a cat to lift a hind leg 6 to 8 inches. This publishes 3. For a cat with stiff hips that is not a comfort improvement, it is the difference between clearing the wall and standing in the doorway to go.

Cornell's guidance is one box more than you have cats. For three cats that is four boxes. The cheapest automatic box on this page is $269.99 -- four plain jumbo pans is a fraction of one of those, and four boxes beat one clever one every time.

15 x 11 = 165 square inches. Petmate's jumbo pan is about 372. This is under half the floor of a home box, which is correct for a suitcase and wrong for a house -- it is a travel item, and using it as a spare at home shortchanges the cat on space.
