“Stainless steel fountain” is a description of what you can see. It is not always a description of where the water goes, and the difference is the whole reason to buy stainless in the first place.
Check the water path, not the finish
The argument for stainless is scratch resistance: plastic develops a texture from claws and from cleaning, and that texture is where biofilm gets a foothold a wipe does not reach. That argument only holds for the surfaces the water actually touches.

All entries are the manufacturers' own published descriptions. PETLIBRO stating its outlet material openly is to its credit -- most makers simply say 'stainless' and stop.
That table is not a criticism of PETLIBRO. It is a design constraint — a spout has to be moulded — and PETLIBRO is unusually straightforward about it. But if the reason you are buying stainless is the water path, only one fountain here satisfies that strictly.
What each costs to keep running
Pioneer Pet publishes an interval rather than a fixed number — two to four weeks — which is more honest than a single figure aimed at the single-cat case, and means 13 to 26 filters a year depending on how many cats use it. Full arithmetic on the running-costs page.
Shape matters as much as material
Two things the specification sheet will not tell you outright:
- Height of the drinking surface. The Raindrop is 4.25 inches tall, so a cat drinks in a natural posture rather than reaching down into a well. That is comfort, and comfort is what gets used.
- Number of approaches. The Drinkwell 360 is built for access from all sides, which in a multi-cat house means two cats can drink without one being cornered. That argument is developed in the multi-cat fountain picks.
What we are not claiming
We are not going to tell you a stainless fountain will improve your cat’s health. We have not tested any of these and we are not veterinarians. The Cornell Feline Health Center discusses water intake in the context of lower urinary tract disease, and that is the right source for it.
