The multi-cat fountain question is usually asked as a capacity question and it is almost never a capacity question. Three cats drink a few hundred milliliters a day between them; every fountain on this page holds liters. What actually decides whether all three cats drink is geometry.
Access geometry, the spec nobody lists
A fountain with one drinking spout has one approach. A cat drinking there has its back to the room, and a second cat that wants a drink has to either displace it or wait. In a household with any hierarchy, the cat that waits is consistently the same cat — and a cat that stops trying is a cat drinking less.

The Drinkwell 360 leads this list on that single attribute. Two cats can drink at opposite sides of it without either being cornered, and in a three-cat house that is worth more than the extra liter of capacity.
Why one big fountain is the wrong shape
The same logic that governs litter boxes governs water. One water source in one room is one resource, and a confident cat sitting in the doorway controls it. Two or three stations in different rooms serve a multi-cat house better than one large fountain, and there is no rule that says every station has to be a fountain — a wide ceramic bowl refreshed daily is a perfectly good station and costs nothing to run.
Our suggested shape for three cats: one fountain with multi-side access in the main living space, plus one or two plain bowls elsewhere. That gives every cat a route to water that does not pass another cat.
The running cost, which is all filters

The multi-cat cleaning reality
More cats means more saliva, more shed fur and more debris in the water, which means the practical filter interval in a three-cat house is at the fast end of whatever the maker publishes, not the slow end. Pioneer Pet is unusually honest about this by giving a range — two to four weeks — rather than a single number aimed at the single-cat case.
Choose a fountain you can strip and wash quickly, because in a multi-cat house you will be doing it more often. The Pioneer Pet Raindrop is dishwasher safe as a unit and has no plastic in the water path, which is why it scores highest here on cleanability despite the smallest capacity.

3.8 L divided three ways is 1.27 L a cat between refills -- far more than any cat drinks in a day, so the constraint is not capacity, it is how long water stays fresh. At fortnightly filter intervals the practical refill cycle is what governs, not the tank.

Catit publishes 12 VA, which is apparent power at the adapter, not watts drawn -- so treat it as a hard ceiling. 12 W x 24 h x 365 = 105.1 kWh, x $0.1834 = $19.28. The real draw is lower, and Catit does not publish it. We are not going to pretend a VA rating is a wattage.
