How to Assemble a Cat Tree

Most wobbling cat trees were not built wobbly. They were built in the wrong order, and then never checked again.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty litter boxes. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specs, read the manuals, and do the arithmetic on what this gear costs to run and how it behaves once there is more than one cat using it. Every spec is linked to the document it came from. Prices are checked daily — last verified January 1, 1970. Here is exactly how we pick.

A cat tree is the only piece of furniture in the house that gets landed on. It is worth an hour and the right order, because a tree that develops a wobble stops being used and cannot easily be fixed after the fact.

Before you start

  1. Unpack completely and count the hardware. Against the list, not by eye. Discovering a missing bolt at step nine means dismantling.
  2. Build where it will live. A 57.5 lb assembled tree does not move through a doorway easily and dragging it stresses every joint at once.
  3. Check the floor is level. A base spanning 19 to 24 inches will find any slope in a floor and turn it into a lean.
  4. Lay the pieces out in build order. Base, posts, platforms, condo, top.

The tightening order is the whole trick

This is the step that separates a solid tree from a wobbly one, and no instruction sheet we have read explains why.

The arithmetic — Why progressive tightening matters

Fully tightening one bolt before starting the next pulls that joint square and everything else out of square. Each subsequent bolt then has to be forced into a hole that no longer lines up, so it goes in at an angle and grips less thread.

Assembling every joint finger-tight first lets the whole structure settle into alignment. Then tightening progressively in stages, in a cross pattern, keeps it aligned as it comes up to full tension. The same principle as wheel nuts, for the same reason.

Finger-tighten everything, stand the tree up, confirm it is square, then tighten in stages across the tree rather than finishing one joint at a time. That single change eliminates most cat tree wobble.

The build

  1. Base first, on the floor, not on carpet if you can avoid it. Carpet compresses unevenly and disguises a lean until the tree is finished.
  2. Posts finger-tight into the base. Do not tighten yet.
  3. Lowest platforms next, finger-tight. Work upward, never skipping a level to reach the fun part.
  4. Condo and top level last. These are the heaviest single components and the hardest to hold in place one-handed — get help rather than balancing.
  5. Stand it up and sight along it. Look for lean and for platforms that are not level.
  6. Now tighten, in stages, across the tree. Two or three passes, not one.
  7. Push-test at the top. Firm horizontal pressure at the highest platform. A little flex is normal; movement at the base is not.

Strapping it to the wall

Any tree over about five feet benefits from an anti-tip strap, and a 72 inch tree especially. The mechanics are exactly those in our shelf mounting guide: find a stud, screw into the center of it, and do not trust a plasterboard plug with a load that arrives suddenly.

One strap into a stud at the top third of the tree is enough. It does not need to be tight — it needs to be there at the moment a cat launches sideways off the top platform.

The two-week re-check nobody does

Particleboard compresses under a fixing. Over the first fortnight the material around every bolt settles slightly, and the joint that was tight on day one has a fraction of a millimeter of play by day fourteen. Multiply that up a 72 inch tree and it reads as a wobble.

  • Two weeks after assembly: go round every bolt again. This is the important one.
  • Every few months after that: a quick push-test, and tighten anything that has moved.
  • After any move: dragging or carrying a tree stresses every joint. Re-check it.
  • If a bolt no longer bites: the hole is stripped. A longer bolt with a washer, or wood glue and a dowel, will fix it; more force will not.

Where it goes changes how stable it feels

A tree in the middle of a room can be pushed in every direction. A tree in a corner can only be pushed in one, and the two walls do part of the work of the base. That is free stability and it costs nothing to take.

Keep the hardware bag and the instruction sheet. Replacement bolts for these trees are rarely a standard size, and a tree that cannot be tightened in year three is a tree that gets thrown away in year three.

Common questions

Why does my cat tree wobble?
Almost always one of three things: bolts tightened fully in sequence rather than progressively, an uneven floor under a large base, or bolts that have loosened since assembly and have never been checked.
How do you tighten a cat tree properly?
Assemble every joint finger-tight first, stand the tree up, check it is square, then go around tightening in stages -- a bit at a time, in a cross pattern, rather than finishing each bolt before starting the next.
Should you attach a cat tree to the wall?
For anything tall, yes if you can. An anti-tip strap into a stud converts a stability problem into a non-problem, and a 72 inch tree in a house with children or an enthusiastic cat is worth the two screws.
How long does it take to assemble a cat tree?
Budget an hour for a multi-level tree and do not rush the tightening stage. A 57.5 lb tree is heavy enough that redoing a step means dismantling from the top down, which is what turns an hour into three.
How often should you check a cat tree's bolts?
Two weeks after assembly and then every few months. Flat-pack furniture settles as the particleboard compresses under the fixings, so a tree that was solid on day one can develop a genuine wobble by week three.
