Cats do not lose interest in the sofa. They lose the ability to make one specific movement, and the movement is easy to break into pieces.
The problem is the rise, not the height
A standard sofa seat sits around 18 inches. Our cat tree pages argue that a comfortable single rise stays near a third of the animal's standing height — call it 8 to 10 inches for an adult cat.
So a sofa is roughly twice a comfortable rise, taken as one explosive movement with a landing on a soft, moving surface. For a young cat that is nothing. For a stiff older cat it is the whole problem.
Three 6 inch steps get to the same 18 inches with no jump at all. The height was never the obstacle.

Manufacturers' published figures. Both capacities are far beyond any cat -- the number matters only in a household where a dog will also use them.
The side rails are the feature worth paying for and the one least discussed. A cat with failing sight or unsteady balance uses an edge to orient, and a rail gives it one. At 5 lb the whole unit also moves between a sofa and a bed without effort.
The foldable set answers the other objection: stairs are furniture, and furniture you cannot put away tends not to get bought. A published folded dimension is what makes that a checkable claim.
Getting them used
- Flush against the furniture. A gap at the top turns the last step back into a jump.
- On the side the cat already approaches from. Not the tidiest side.
- Nonslip underneath. A set that shifts on the first attempt has taught the cat something.
- Lure, do not lift. A treat on each step, then on the sofa. Never place a cat on the stairs — the same rule as our post training page.
- Leave the old route available. A cat that feels the jump has been taken away will keep trying it.
The same problem everywhere else in the house
A cat that has stopped jumping onto the sofa is also finding other things harder, and it is worth doing a circuit:

Our cat tree pages argue that a single rise should stay near a third of the animal's standing height. A sofa seat at 18 inches is three to four times a cat's comfortable step. Stairs break that into rises a stiff cat can walk rather than jump, which is the whole intervention -- height is not the problem, the single big rise is.

A 20 inch step set reaches a standard sofa seat. A 25 inch set reaches most bed heights. Buying the taller one for a sofa leaves the top step above the seat, which is worse than no stairs -- the cat has to step down onto the destination.

27 inches of ledge split two ways is 13.5 inches each -- less than a cat's body length. Two cats will not share this; in a multi-cat house it is one perch per window, not one perch for the household.
