Chewing is the least-catered-for feline behavior in the toy aisle, mostly because the products that address it are shelved under dental care and sold on the wrong claim.
Why cats chew
The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative frames play as a predatory sequence: stalk, chase, catch, kill. The last stage involves gripping and working at prey with the mouth, and a cat that chews toys is finishing that sequence rather than failing at play.
Some cats bat and never chew. Some grip and work at everything. Watching which yours does is worth more than any product page, and it is the same observation our wand toys page asks you to make about flight against twitch.

The mesh chew is the closest thing to a purpose-built cat chew toy in general distribution. Soft mesh over a catnip-stuffed body, sized to carry, and honest enough not to overclaim.

Where the category goes wrong
Supervision and inspection
Mesh is the trade-off in this category: it gives the texture that makes a chew toy work, and it shreds under a determined cat. Petstages says so plainly, and the practical rules follow:
- Inspect weekly. Pull-test seams and any attachment.
- Bin it at the first opening. A shell with the fill showing is a small-parts problem, not a worn toy.
- Do not leave a heavy chewer unsupervised with mesh. Rotate it in during sessions and put it away after.

If the chewing is aimed at your things

Redirection helps alongside that. Offer an appropriate chew at the moment the cat goes for the wrong thing, and pair it with an interactive session — a wand toy that ends in a catch gives the predatory sequence somewhere legitimate to finish. Persistent chewing of non-food items is worth raising with a vet.

Mesh over a soft body gives some surface contact as a cat chews. That is not plaque removal in the sense a brush achieves, and Petstages does not claim it is. Treat it as a chewing outlet that a cat enjoys, and keep dental care where it belongs -- with a brush and with a veterinarian.

Bol and colleagues tested 100 domestic cats and found one in three did not respond to catnip. So roughly 67 percent respond. If yours is in the other third, that is not a defective toy -- and the same study found almost 75 percent of catnip non-responders did respond to silver vine.
