Moving House With Cats
Moving day is the single most likely day of a cat's life for it to bolt out of an open door. Everything about the plan follows from that.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty litter boxes. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specs, read the manuals, and do the arithmetic on what this gear costs to run and how it behaves once there is more than one cat using it. Every part of a move that goes wrong for a cat comes from the same thing: doors standing open for hours while strangers carry furniture through them.
Before: the jobs with deadlines
- Update the microchip registration with the new address and phone number. Do it the week before, not the week after.
- Check the collar and tag. A break-away collar is the only kind a cat should wear -- the buckle releases if it snags, which is the failure mode that matters.
- Keep the routine identical while boxes accumulate: same feeding times, same litter, boxes in the same places until the last day.
- Bring the carrier out weeks early, open, with a blanket in it.
- Plan the two safe rooms -- one at each end -- and label them so nobody opens the door.
Moving day itself
A front door propped open for six hours is an invitation, and a cat that bolts into an unfamiliar street has no territory to navigate by.
The room: empty, with the litter box, water, food, a bed and the carrier. A sign on the door saying DO NOT OPEN, and tape it shut if the movers are strangers.
The order: the cat’s room is packed last and unpacked first. The cat travels with you, not in the van, secured as our car travel guide sets out.
After: the part people rush
Set the new safe room up before the cat comes in: same litter, same box if you can bring it, same bedding unwashed so it smells right. Then leave the cat in there with the door shut while the rest of the house is chaos.
A pheromone diffuser plugged into that room before arrival is a reasonable addition -- ours is an honest position on it: the published evidence is mixed, FELIWAY publishes 700 sq ft of coverage and a 30-day minimum trial, and our diffuser page says the same.
Open the house up gradually, one room at a time, over days rather than hours. The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative treats hiding places and elevated spots as basic needs, and a cat exploring a new house wants both available in every room you open.
If your cat goes outside
- Keep it in for several weeks, until the new house is clearly home -- eating well, sleeping openly, using the box without hesitation.
- First trips out should be short, supervised and before a meal, so there is a reason to come back.

- Tell the new neighbors and, if you can, the old ones. Cats do occasionally attempt the journey back.

At a published 30 days per 48 mL refill that is 12 refills a year, plus 2 plug-in devices at the published six-month replacement interval. It is a subscription, not a purchase, and a 700 sq ft coverage figure means a larger home needs more than one running at once. Those two facts together are the whole cost picture and neither is on the front of the box.
What the specs favor
- Publishes coverage, refill volume and both replacement intervals
- Publishes a minimum trial period of 30 days rather than implying instant results
- Publishes placement instructions, which are the usual reason it does nothing
- No cat handling required, unlike every other behavioral intervention
What they don't
- A recurring cost with no end date
- 700 sq ft means multiple units in an average house
- Published evidence on pheromone efficacy is mixed and we are not qualified to weigh it
- It cannot change a resource or territory problem, which is what most multi-cat tension is

A cat that catches a collar on a branch, a fence or a piece of furniture will twist and pull against it. A conventional buckle holds; the cat does not stop. A break-away buckle is designed to open first, which converts the worst outcome into a lost collar.

- Published neck ranges rather than S/M/L alone
- Nylon, so it survives weather and washes
- Leash compatible when the release is secured, which most break-aways are not
What they don't
- It will come off, and you will replace collars
- Published sizes lean toward dogs; the small covers most adult cats
- A collar is not identification on its own -- the tag is
Your cat is microchipped and never goes out. An indoor cat with a chip does not need a collar, and the safest collar is still one more thing round a cat's neck.

That is an honest business model and it means the sticker price is not the cost -- budget the monthly plan for as long as the cat goes outside, and read the plan length before committing, because the cheapest monthly rates are on the longest terms.
